Starved Rock is about 2 hours west of Chicago in the town of Utica. The park is named after a battle between two warring Indian tribes. One tribe climbed to the top of a cliff and was surrounded by the other tribe. They were kept there until all had starved.
It's a park type area with various trails to that lead to a number of waterfalls and cliffs that overlook the Illinois River. Parts of the trail are paved and there are numerous wood stairways that connect trails. We happened to go after a rain storm, which is great for full waterfalls, but made for lots of mud. It was an abnormally hot day in March and the mist from the waterfalls as we approached felt good. It was a pleasure to get away from the city and enjoy a little nature and an early spring.
